In front of the Governor General, who was a guest of the MCC, South went in as favourites but on a firm ground they didn't have it all their way before securing the four points.

The visitors had the advantage of the breeze first and quickly scored, but the Redlegs showed admirable resistance and kicked two of the first three goals of the day. They were playing better football with superior marking and systematic passing.

They then used the wind to their advantage in the second to open up a three goal lead at the long break, but lost Cope to a shoulder injury until late in the third quarter and his absence caused a disorganisation in the side. South had also made a number of positional changes which helped them kick four goals without reply.

Best were Tomkins, Kennedy and Naismith.
