St Kilda flattered their supporters into thinking that their team was going to break a long spell of misfortune, but they fell apart in the final term and Melbourne ran away with a comfortable victory in the end.

The home side had the advantage of a stiff wind in the first quarter, and they used it to rack up a three goal lead as Melbourne tried to defend the breeze by playing forward Coutie as a second rover. The visitors were lucky to even get one goal in the first quarter, with a snapshot bouncing through an unattended goal.

In the second quarter Melbourne took the lead, but despite St Kilda effectively losing a player to injury when he had to stand in the forward line they struck back to take a one goal lead at the last change. Melbourne got a late goal in the quarter to keep themselves in the game, and they run over the top of their opponents in the last quarter.

They got the equaliser shortly after the restart and took over despite injuries to Pearce and Hodgkins who spent most of the final term limping.

Best were Norman, Coutie and Robertson.
