After four losses in a row the Demons faced up against the old enemy on a Queen's Birthday Monday at Waverley. Barassi's latest maltreatment of Robert Flower consisted of him playing the champion at centre half-forward for the entire first half although he was convincingly beaten.

Even Collingwood players were questioning the move after the match. Barassi claimed it was due to a lack of alternative options and pointed out that Flower had beaten the likes of Ross Glendinning playing there before. When questioned by the press he said: “I suppose you will make something of it. We don’t give a stuff”. His outburst ignored the fact that Melbourne’s best period of the game came when Flower was thrown to the wing after half time.

22 points down at the long break the Demons hit the lead just before three-quarter time thanks to goals from Flower, Kelvin Templeton, Gerard Healy and Kelly O'Donnell. The Pies struck back to lead by four points at the last break, and then when they kicked the first three goals of the last quarter the match was over.

Best were Johnson, McLean and Flower. Smith suffered a bruised foot.
