In a fast, open and fair game the two sides put on a good spectacle for the few fans present. Accurate goalkicking was also a feature, with Melbourne booting hte first five goals without miss.
The Reds held a 14 point lead at the long break, before Geelong belatedly came to play in the third. The visitors turned the deficit into a three point lead. The home team's accuracy gave them the advantage again when they turned their fourth quarter chances into goals while Geelong only managed points. When the siren went the margin was a goal, before the conversion extended the gap to 12.
