In a fast, open and fair game the two sides put on a good spectacle for the few fans present. Accurate goalkicking was also a feature, with Melbourne booting hte first five goals without miss.

The Reds held a 14 point lead at the long break, before Geelong belatedly came to play in the third. The visitors turned the deficit into a three point lead. The home team's accuracy gave them the advantage again when they turned their fourth quarter chances into goals while Geelong only managed points.
