In a fast, open and fair game the two sides put on a good spectacle for the few fans present. Accurate goalkicking was also a feature, with Melbourne booting the first five goals without miss. It helped them take control of a game that they had started underdogs against the mid-table visitors. Their cause was also helped by a dominant display by McKenzie on the wing, and by a strong game from Pearce at full back. Melbourne's attack was better functioning than Geelong's, which often wasted chances with haphazard kicking into attack.

The Reds held a 14 point lead at the long break, before Geelong belatedly came to play in the third. They were as much as nine points in front before a late Brereton goal from an angle reduced the gap to three. With only a slight breeze blowing across the ground, the home team were the only side to score in the last quarter, kicking two goals to no score. The first came early, with Hodgkins finishing a flowing move that had taken the ball from one end of the ground to the other. The margin remained under a goal for most of the quarter before Brereton snapped a behind that left his side six points up, he goalled shortly before the bell to make sure Geelong didn't snatch a draw.

Best were Tomkins, McKenzie and Politz.

After the match a presentation was made to the recently retired Vin Coutie.
