The feelgood factor for the Demons and their mini mid-season revival looked like it might continue when they were just a point down at three-quarter time in Geelong, but the Cats ran away with the game in the last term and consigned Melbourne to their 10th loss for the year.
Despite conceding seven goals to Doug Wade, Paul Rowlands won praise for his performance in restricting the Cats spearhead. Rowlands was dominant early, but the day changed for Wade in the second quarter when he robbed Frank Davis out of an easy mark by calling for him to leave it. Davis fell for the trick, Wade swooped in for a mark, goalled and was on his way.
Best were Alves, Townsend and Johnson. Alves was replaced by Stone in the last quarter and Mitchell by K. Clarke in the last quarter.
Only Fitzroy's loss at Footscray kept the Demons a game above them in the race to avoid the wooden spoon.
