A 17th straight win for the Demons was earned with a miserly defensive performance that restricted Richmond to their lowest score against Melbourne since 1925.
The Tiger rucks won, and they matched the Demons across the centre but weren't helped by the with mud and wet conditions turning the match into a scramble. Melbourne's defence was also too strong, and while they were wasteful in the first quarter the home side found their range over the next three terms and easily drew away to win.
Best were Geoff McGivern, John Beckwith and Denis Cordner. Laidlaw replaced Dixon (bruised shoulder) and Marquis replaced Bob Johnson (cramp).
Norm Smith said "Once more our defence lines played the leading role in the team's success. Full marks must go to the Tigers for the tough way they fought out this game."
