After losing their first eight games of the season the Reds won three games in a row before their streak came to an end in a thrilling finish.

Despite Melbourne's positive recent form they were up against one of the premiership fancies, and a team playing to all but seal their place in the top four with six games to play. South were missing key players due to injury but at half-time it looked as if the script was going to be followed to the letter as South's big men brushed their opponents off to open a lead of five goals at the long break.

That was until the home side kicked six goals in the third quarter to draw level, but that was as close as they got. South's big men then took control again and extended the lead to 13 points at the last change.

Melbourne were again strong in the last quarter, forcing South onto the defensive time and time again. They drew within three points with seven minutes to go but lacked the attacking poise to get in front and the visitors kicked the sealer. Despite their struggles it was South's largest score against Melbourne since 1919.

Best were Vanthoff, Pemberton and Long. McMahon was 19th man.
