In front of an almost grand final atmosphere, something Melbourne fans had missed for so long, the Demons jumped Collingwood in the first half as the Pies players spent more time trying to rub out their opponents.

The Demons held a lead from nine minutes into the first quarter and held it until 15 minutes into the third term.

The lead changed five times, and were equal four more. Unfortunately for the Demons they were wasteful in front of goal and should have had a lead of more than 11 at the half. Tony Dullard took the mark of the day then missed from 25 metres out straight in front, and both Ross Brewer and Ray Biffin missed simple shots.

When the Magpies got into gear during the third term the Demons had no answer. Craig McKellar, who had been prominent, dropped off and Colin Graham, brilliant early, dropped off. They would rue missed chances.

Greg Wells was the best, his 30th kick came in the last quarter and brought up his third goal. Gary Hardeman and Craig McKellar were also prominent. Tippett was replaced by Cumming in the third quarter. Dullard was replaced by Des Campbell in the last quarter.
