Melbourne sold their home game to the Gabba for financial reasons, but they put in such a poor performance that it wouldn't have helped where they played. It was a far cry from the Demons previous visit to the ground where they had not only pocketed the gate money but also sprung a come from behind victory in the upset of the season.

The reigning premiers had spent the first two months of the new season having their form questioned, but responded with a blistering performance which exposed all of Melbourne's frailities.

Alistair Nicholson made his return after a knee injury, but both Travis Johnstone and Cameron Bruce were missing.

Ex-Demon Martin Pike kicked the first goal ten seconds into the game, and it didn't get much better for the Demons from on. Their first score was with a point 24 minutes into the first term - by which point the Lions were 39-1 in front.

Clint Bizzell kicked the Demons' first 11 minutes into the second, and they added three more goals for some respectability but were never in the hunt. Alastair Lynch and Blake Caracella both had four goals by the long break.
