Two hours before the first bounce in Melbourne's season opener, the AFL announced that the season would be suspended due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis. In front of empty stands, the sides played out a game without knowing if there would be another one in season 2020.
Melbourne started poorly, missing a number of chances and conceding four quick goals late in the first quarter that left them near 30 points down. They broke even for the rest of the match but never got within range to challenge the Eagles.
Best were Viney, May and Pickett.
