Saturday May 10 - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: "About 10,000"
Melbourne 3.11
Carlton 2.9 (half-time 3.4 to 2.5)
Melbourne win by 1 goal
Goalkickers: McAllister 2, McIntyre 1
On a soft and heavy ground Melbourne's inaccurate goalkicking kept Carlton in the game but they did just enough to win their second game in a row to start the season.
The home side (though the Blues would soon usurp them as the favoured tenants of the MCC) attacked first, and goalled within the first five minutes through McIntyre who marked and strolled in to kick a major when he turned around to find nobody defending the goals.
Carlton soon equalised, but with Melbourne playing the better football they found their opponents disorganised in defence and capitalised with two more goals from McAllister before half time. Carlton got another to keep it interesting, but they were being outplayed.
The honours were slightly in favour of Melbourne in the second half, but they were wasteful with their kicking and no further goals were scored. Carlton had their opportunity when they camped in front of the red goal for a few minutes but couldn't break through and Melbourne won.
Best were McIntyre, Plant and Tuckfield. Umpire P. O'Neil drew the ire of Melbourne fans on several occassions.
Notes
Some sources have the crowd as 12,000 and the half time score as 3.5-2.5
