After three seasons coaching a side made up of Air Force engineering cadets, Lack trained with Melbourne in the 1978 pre-season after walking into the MCG and asking for a trial.
Due to his stint in North Melbourne's zone while playing for Myrtleford he was forced to ask them permission to train with Melbourne, which was granted. Lack then appeared in a number of practice matches but an RAAF posting to Newcastle in April meant he wouldn't be able to take a spot on the list. He was cleared to Powerhouse in the VAFA and played with them before leaving for New South Wales.
He then played for Newcastle City, coaching them to a grand final in 1979 before work commitments meant he had to step down as senior coach and concentrate on playing.
In 1980 he returned to Victoria and played for Murrumbeena, but returned to New South Wales in 1984 and then joined the Parramatta/Holroyd side in 1985. At the end of 1986 he retired after suffering a broken hand.
Lack's father Harry played three games for Melbourne in 1952.
