Saturday 21 June - MCG
Crowd: 8000-10,000
Melbourne 1.2
Geelong 7.15 (half time 0.1-2.9)
Geelong win by 6 goals
Goalkicker: Rush 1
A season which had promised so much when the reds earned two wins in a row to start the VFA campaign went from bad to worse as they were thrashed by the visitors from the pivot.
The match was played in good conditions for football, but with the ground a little slippery after recent rains. Geelong had first effort on goal but missed, and when Melbourne made their first attack they were repelled leading to another behind for the visitors.
Geelong scored first and Melbourne were clearly overmatched. They were being beaten all over the ground. If Geelong had been able to breach the tough defensive play of McDonald Aitken they might have had more goals instead of nine behinds in a row, but just before half time the visitors did get their second.
With the advantage of playing downhill in the second half Geelong ran riot. They were four up before Rush scored Melbourne's only major of the afternoon and added three more after.
Best were Mackenzie, Murphy and Plant.
