June 1879 match vs Albert Park

Saturday 14 June - South Melbourne Cricket Ground

Albert Park 6.9
Melbourne 0.7 (half time 5-0)

Albert Park win by 6 goals

Goalkickers: Nil

Fresh off a disappointing loss to Carlton a week earlier, the Melbourne side travelled to the South Melbourne Cricket Ground and suffered an even bigger humiliation. Albert Park had been beaten comfortably by Carlton as well, and both teams mustered their strongest teams for the clash - but the visitors were destroyed.

Melbourne kicked off, but as would be the trend throughout the afternoon the ball soon wound up in front of their goal. In their first attack the home team only managed a behind, but it didn't take them long to open the scoring. They played an attacking style and along with their teamwork and 'little marks' were totally dominant to the point where Sillett - captain of the Reds and one of the few defenders who been able to stand up to Albert Park so far.

With their tails up the red and whites soon added two more. It was the wake-up call that the visitors needed, but it was to no avail as they had already thrown the game away. They only managed two behinds in the first half, opposed to five goals by Albert Park, several behinds and a disputed goal.

Melbourne had the breeze in the second half but they only managed one decent but ultimately fruitless attack on goal. Albert Park kicked another and the rout was complete.

Best were E. Longden, McKenzie and Boys.
