Saturday July 23 - MCG
Melbourne 3.1, 3.2, 4.5, 4.5
Carlton 0.1, 4.3, 5.3, 5.12
Carlton win by 1 goal
Goalkickers: MCrindle 2, Murphy 1, Griffith 1
The attendance of the match was given a boost by the Essendon vs South Melbourne game on the East Melbourne ground being cancelled after the death of South's secretary.
Melbourne attacked first in fast start before the Carlton side settled, and from there the visitors were the far superior team. The Reds spent much of their time fumbling the ball and missing easy chances on goal which allowed Carlton time to regroup and come with a flourish in the second quarter.
The Blues had accuracy issues of their own, keeping Melbourne scoreless in the last quarter but failing to register a goal from nine shots. A late goal by King was a consolation.
Best were McKenzie, Murphy and Kelly.
