1953 pre-season half-forward. He turned back other offers from Carlton and Geelong) and returned to Sandhurst, before joining ((Hawthorn in 1955.

He captained the Hawks' 1961 premiership side, won three best and fairests, and coached the club. In 1996 he was inducted to the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
