Eric Clive Hamlet Taylor was better known as "Bully" or "ECH". He was educated at Geelong Grammar, and held his first teaching role at the school in 1915. He had trained with Geelong but suffered a serious knee injury which ended his playing career.

He became a master and coach of Melbourne Grammar from 1917 to 1952, winning 20 premierships with the school. He also coached the Melbourne University rowing team.

In 1932, Taylor proposed that the club stop paying players, gradually becoming an all-amateur side. His idea was not accepted.

Taylor was the originator of Coterie, a member of the match committee and an identity around the club for many years. He served on the committee from 1933 through 1955.

He was made a Life Member in 1945 and wrote a history of the club in the 1950s. In 1953 he coached the Queensland state team.

In 1999, Taylor was named coach of the Melbourne Grammar Team of the Century.
