From: South Fremantle

Number: 51 (1987 list)

Regarded as one of the best teenagers in the country after playing Teal Cup for Western Australia in 1983 the Demons took advantage of a breakdown in permit agreements between the VFL and WAFL to sign Edwards from South Fremantle - much to the chagrin of the Bulldogs who complained bitterly about Melbourne's conduct. Edwards had been due to play a Reserves game for South Fremantle in early 1984 but instead chose to accept Melbourne's invitation to join them. In return, the Demons offered South a $45,000 transfer fee, and gave Edwards a three year contract. He was reportedly on $300 a week, with a $10,000 bonus for a league debut, and another $10,000 for reaching 50 VFL games.

Edwards remained in the Under 19s for three seasons, playing Teal Cup for Victoria the next year. After just three games in 1986 due to six hamstring injuries, Edwards was retained on the list in 1987 he decided to take a year off to concentrate on his job. He returned in 1988 but did not play a senior game.
