August 1884 match vs Essendon

Saturday 9 August - East Melbourne
Crowd: 1500-3000

Melbourne 2.14
Essendon 9.13 (half time 2.11-3.4)

Essendon win by 7 goals

Goalkickers: Plant 1, Franks 1

Having suffered defeat the last time they played against Melbourne, Essendon welcomed the reds back to their ground and delivered a hiding. Melbourne had a fair breeze - albeit much of it blowing across the ground - in the first half, and they kicked a behind not long after the start, but when Essendon scored the first two goals it was the start of a long day at the office.

Plant got one back for Melbourne, but they went 3-1 down with the wind in their favour and were showing a serious lack of system and teamwork. Franks got a late consolation, but after wasting so many chances and with the wind in their faces in the second half a serious beating was always on the cards.

Essendon proceeded to deliver just that, former Melburnian and now Essendon captain Dave Aitken scoring the first two goals of the half and his side piled on seven unanswered. Melbourne responded with just two behinds.

Best were George Aitken, Jones and Plant.
