August 1878 Match vs Albert Park

Saturday 3 August - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: 3000

Melbourne 5
Albert Park 0 (half time 2-0)

Melbourne win by 5 goals

Goalkickers: JV Cook 2, Longden 2, F. Baker 1

After a rocky start to the year where they'd only had two wins - both against Carlton - and had already lost once to Albert Park, Melbourne finally found form against a senior side. They brought their best team to the match, and kicked two goals in the first half (both through Cook). They were constantly on the attack, marking strongly in their forward line but usually just out of range to score.

The second half saw Melbourne again forcing the locals into defence, but they couldn't hold them out for long. Eventually Longden scored two and F. Baker one to register a comprehensive victory. Albert Park had their chances but either couldn't break down Melbourne's defence or missed easy shots.

Best were Longden, Lamrock and Crohan.
