August 1872 match vs Richmond

Saturday 31 August - Melbourne Ground

Melbourne 2
Richmond 0 (half time 0-0)

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Austin Loughnan 1, Charles Carr 1

Melbourne played with 16 against 20 of the champion junior club and won with two second half goals.

Goldsmith was Melbourne's captain, and his side had the better of the attacking opportunities in the first half but often found themselves unable to break through Richmond's superior numbers. The captain had the best chance, having a shot that many spectators thought he'd kicked before it was disallowed.

After half-time Richmond's energy flagged, while Melbourne remained strong. It took 15 minutes of fierce scrimmaging in front of Melbourne's goal before Loughnan finally kicked a goal out of a pack.10 minutes later Carr added the second from a difficult angle and the game was over.
