Despite holding Melbourne scoreless in the first half the Lions failed to capitalise on numerous opportunities to score, only managing one goal for the game.
By the time the Demons worked their way into the match late they were dominant and a goal by Sellar put them in front. Brisbane had the chance to snatch victory but a desperate last minute attempt on goal rolled wide and Melbourne ended their first round NAB Cup commitments with one win and one draw.
Best were Bate, Moloney and Grimes.
