Early in the second quarter Adelaide were 32 points in front and looked set to be cruising to an easy victory. The Demons then booted five goals in a row to get themselves back into the match before dominating the third term. Adelaide struck back late in the match but the damage had been done and Melbourne got their 2000 campaign off to a bright start.
Ex-Bulldogs Powell (3 goals and 31 possessions) and Cook (6 goals) were the best for the Demons in their first official games wearing red and blue.
