The Demons led by 29 points at half-time but Ron Barassi rested a number of senior players including Steven Smith and Peter Moore. Robert Flower and Kelvin Templeton didn't play.
With the sides set to clash again in a night game on the following Wednesday he ended up using 34 players for the day, 10 more than Carlton but with his stars off the field in the second half the Blues ran away to an easy victory.
Best were Withers, O'Sullivan and Battiston.
Notes
The Armstrong who kicked four goals was probably Richard Armstrong.
