Fallen SANFL powerhouse Port, who had missed the finals for the first time in 30 years, visited the MCG and adapted to the slippery conditions much better than the home side. Their inaccuracy cost them a victory they would have richly deserved. A Demon lead in the first quarter evapourated into a deficit and they didn't wrest control back until seven minutes into the last term.
Melbourne's best were Hardeman, Clark and Wells.
