Shooting for their fourth night premiership the Bulldogs were upset by Melbourne, who despite finishing last on the league ladder showed strong form for a second straight week in the night series.
The Demons made their first night final in a tight defensive battle, once again aided by their opposition kicking abysmally for goal.
In light rain the Melbourne rucks were again eclipsed but they had Frank Davis playing a brilliant game in the back pocket, and when they weren't missing shots on goal the Footscray forwards usually found him impassable.
Best were Davis, Wells and Rollinson.
