Richmond win by 47 points
Goalkickers: Gleeson 1, Ridley 1, Mueller 1, Webster 1
The Tigers comfortably won the league seconds premiership despite terrible inaccuracy. With Melbourne unable to break through their defence for any score in the first 20 minutes they were lucky that down the other end while Richmond were able to attack they only managed one goal from eight scoring shots.
Melbourne could have kicked an important goal early in the second quarter but Jack Mueller ran into an open goal and missed. Richmond kicked a goal on the rebound then another one directly from the centre bounce to open up a comfortable lead.
Mueller made amends too late when he kicked his side's first goal but Richmond replied immediately to maintain their big lead. Two late goals helped Melbourne back into the game, and they reduced the deficit to 16 points at half time.
Richmond opened the third quarter with a string of behinds, still failing to take their chances to put Melbourne away, before finally added two more goals to extend the margin to over five goals. Their opponents were wasting opportunities by over-possessing the ball by hand and attacking around the wing, and Richmond opened up a winning 45 point lead at the last break.
It was all Richmond in the last quarter, but as with the rest of the game they were inaccurate and kicked five points before scoring a goal which killed off any hope the Demons had.
Best were Woods, Constable, R. McKenzie. Hayes replaced Laidlaw (head injury) at half time and Power replaced Magee (head injury) at three-quarter time.
