Melbourne win by 78 points

Melbourne travelled to Sydney by sea and returned by train. Captain Allan La Fontaine missed the game after being injured in a car accident. Four players were in the car, but La Fontaine was the worst hurt - cutting his arm on a jagged window. John Lewis took his place as captain and Truscott his place in the team.
The visitors were ragged early on, and New South Wales managed to stay with them. A late goal gave the Demons a 15 point lead. They improved their performance significantly in the second, but so did the locals. Each side kicked two goals for the quarter but Melbourne also had eight behinds as they were wasteful with their chances. New South Wales' players were on a larger ground than they were used to, and struggled with a lack of cohesive play due to limited training opportunities.
Despite their easy win, Melbourne were so impressed by local Henry Crane that they sought permission to interview him directly after the game. He signed for the club but never played a senior game.
