Saturday 4 August - Richmond Paddock
Crowd: Unknown

Melbourne 2
Essendon 0 (half time 1-0)

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Charles Baker 1, James Macdonald 1

Finally arresting a run of bad form, 20 Melbourne players took on 25 of Essendon and won comfortably. Downes, MacDonald, Lamrock and Sillett returned after missing the match against Williamstown the previous week.

C. Baker got the first goal for Melbourne after fifteen minutes, and MacDonald should have added won soon after but missed in "ludicrous fashion" after rushing his kick.

In the second half MacDonald doubled the advantage. Lamrock performed admirable defensive work, and James Bennie was best on ground with his contested marks. Sillett was also amongst the best.
