The former Queensland Teal Cup player joined from Essendon, where he had played 31 games as a ruckman and key forward over five seasons. He had also represented Queensland in the 1988 Bicentennial Football Carnival. Spencer suffered a series of knee and back injuries, leading Essendon to swap him for Melbourne's first and seventh selections in the 1989 draft. Footscray showed interest first but pulled out due to Spencer's medical history.

Spencer injured his knee again in just his second game for the Demons and missed the rest of the season. After being carried off he was jogging along the sidelines minutes later, and was in the three-quarter-time huddle before the knee swelled again and scans showed the extent of the damage.

Spencer one further game in 1991 before being delisted in June. He was picked up by Geelong, debuting in Round 18 and keeping his spot all the way through to the Cats losing preliminary final side. He injured his knee again in the 1992 pre-season and did not play AFL football again.

Played with St Bernard's in 1993 and was picked in the VAFA's state representative team.
