September 1889 match vs Richmond

Saturday 21 September - Friendly Societies' Ground

Melbourne 0.5 1.7, 4.7, 4.8
Richmond 1.2, 1.3, 2.5, 2.10

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Farrell 1, R. Kelly 1, Hallett 1, J. Benson 1

After a nightmare run where their status as a senior club had been in question, Melbourne won a meritorious victory - their first for two and a half months, and the first for the season not against wooden spooners Footscray.

Richmond got the only goal of the first quarter, but tellingly Melbourne had more shots on goal. By half time they had equalised and they went away to win despite Richmond levelling the total 'scoring' shots.

Best were Hallett, Kelly and Strachan.
