After a long wait, Hotham registered a behind, before the game was confined for a time to the centre of the ground. The visitors eventually relieved the ball and got it right to Hotham's line where Ewing kicked the first goal of the day for the Reds. It was their only scoring attempt for the first half - and their last major for the day.

Hotham kicked three goals in the second quarter, and despite not scoring another in the third they kept Melbourne goalless then added three in the final term.

Best were Kelly, Hallett and Griffiths.
