Carlton went into the match unbeaten, while Melbourne had suffered two defeats and were third on the ladder - so it was a surprise when the visitors kicked with the breeze and obliterated the top of the table Blues with an eight goal to nil first quarter. Melbourne officials had argued that their loss to Footscray was because many first choice players were underdone, and the first quarter of this game added credibility to their claims.

Without Jack Mueller or Ron Baggott Melbourne were expected to have trouble putting up a competitive score against the red hot league leaders, but responded by kicking seven goals in the first 15 minutes of the game which left the home side reeling. Four of the goals came from Percy Beames, and many of the side's goals were courtesy of dominant ruck work from Rowley Fischer. Melbourne was 7.2 to nil midway through the quarter, and when Carlton had their first attack of the day they missed a goal from 12 yards out.

The Blues stemmed the bleeding in the last few minutes of the quarter but couldn't kick a goal. They had all but lost the game, but as the match went on Carlton regained some of their old form. In the second quarter they took on the direct kicking tactics that had been so successful for Melbourne in the first term and cut the lead to 27 points.

Aided by the breeze Melbourne set out to kill off the Blues in the third quarter, and they kicked the first two goals of the quarter. They had more chances but were wasteful in front of goal and allowed Carlton to rally and reduce the lead to 21 points.

The wind died down in the last quarter but Blues continued to play the better football and hit the lead with only a few minutes remaining. Despite being down another player in the last quarter thanks to Jack Maher being struck and knocked out by a Carlton player 50 yards behind play Melbourne struck back with a goal from Percy Beames to re-take the lead and held onto it until the final siren.

Beames, Fischer and Smith were best. 19th man McNamara replaced Maher during the last quarter, who had been struck behind play by a Carlton player.
