After a bright start to the season the Reds suffered their second comfortable loss in a row, taking some of the shine off a start to the year which had seen them marked as premiership contenders. It didn't help that they were without a number of players, including star forward Roy Park.
The ground was barely affected by heavy rain, but it was slippery enough to cause trouble for the players. A strong wind favoured the Blues who opened up a 21 point lead at the first break, but despite the wind in their favour in the second they failed to take a big chunk out of the lead.
Against the wind the Reds outscored Carlton in the third term, cutting the lead to just 13 points with the use of the breeze in the final term. They pushed hard for the first five minutes but died off after that and allowed themselves to be outscored - the margin extending back to exactly what it had been at quarter time.
Carlton won with superior marking in the wet conditions, and despite Melbourne playing well out of the ruck they were dominated in by the Blues' rovers. Three goals in the last quarter gave Melbourne a respectable tally for the day, but they also conceded four to end the game.
Evans, Collins and Rodriguez were best.
