In their disappointing 1942 campaign the only team who Melbourne played and defeated twice were the Mayblooms, who were one of a handful of sides worse off than them because of the war. After a surprise win over South Melbourne in their second match of the season they went into the next match hoping for another victory to get ahead of the ledger for season 1943, but were surprised on their own turf.

The margin was a point in Hawthorn's favour nearing quarter time, before they added a late goal to extend the gap to seven. Melbourne had wasted what advantage they had with the breeze, and Hawthorn were able to extend the margin by another goal before half time.

Melbourne was forced to reshuffle their team due to an injury to Gibb, and it didn't help their cause as Hawthorn extended the gap to 40. An initial burst by the Demons petered out, and by full time they were even further behind.

Best were Don Cordner, Emselle and Rodda. 19th man Herbert replaced Gibb (leg injury) at half time.
