The faltering Demons stayed in the hunt for a top four finish with a dramatic draw against the Cats at Skilled Stadium. Having broken their 16 season long run outs in Geelong the year before it looked as if the Dees were going to rack up two in a row when they took a five goal lead into half time. The game high lead was 38 points before Geelong fought back to hit the lead in the last quarter.

With David Neitz a late withdrawal with a hip-flexor injury, Melbourne was missing their spearhead but could still call on Russell Robertson who had booted seven in the corresponding fixture in 2005. He kicked two on the day but it was Adem Yze who put himself in the highlight reel with a mark of the year contender.

A Matthew Scarlett goal, courtesy of a heavy Steve Johnson hit on Ben Holland, put the Cats ahead late in the last quarter only to see Mark Jamar kick a goal to level the scores soon after.

With seconds remaining Nathan Carroll dropped a mark 20 metres out from goal, but the the final siren narrowly beat a Jimmy Bartel handball which rolled through for what would have been a match-winning rushed behind for the Cats.

Matthew Whelan suffered a hamstring injury.
