Another comfortable win extended Melbourne's winning streak to two to start the seasons. It was a bad day for the city of Geelong, Melbourne Grammar had already won the annual Boat Race and back in the city their football team were being thrashed.

The Pivotonians had been dominant in victory against North Melbourne in the first round and went into the match favourites but were blown out of the water by a fast starting Redleg side who slammed on 34 points with the wind before their opponents even managed one. They had attacked first, but once the Demon defence turned them back they were powerless to avoid Melbourne's strong attack.

The wind was not a major factor, as it was described as a 'light breeze' but Melbourne were by far the superior team, with better pace, marking and teamwork. They also had a strong defence which kept the Pivotonians at bay, and kept them scoreless for the entire first quarter.

Geelong struck back with two goals in a row early in the second quarter when they had their turn using the breeze, cutting the margin to 26 points, but were once again blown away in the third, with South Australian recruit Margitich showing his star quality by banging on six goals.

Pemberton, Davidson and Warne-Smith were best. Esposito was originally chosen as 19th man, but shortly before the bounce it was discovered that he was not at the ground due to a car breakdown. (Colin Jackson)) was replaced him as 19th man and made his league debut in the second half when Usher couldn't return after the break due to a knock to the head that required stitches.
