Played in wintry rain and mud, the match wasn't a classic. Melbourne adopted better to the conditions than Essendon and kicked the ball along the ground wherever possible instead of trying to play their normal game. The visitors attempted to pick the ball up and found themselves fumbling it, failing to take advantage of the wind in the first quarter.
In a low scoring game each side was held to a point each in the opening term, and while Melbourne only got one goal in the second term they held the visitors to a point and were six up at half time. Essendon failed with the wind again in the third, conceding two goals to one. In the last term Essendon challenged, but were too far behind and just as they were pressing for a goal which would have put them within striking range the sealer was kicked by Frank Langley.
Best was McGinis, Purse and Sowden.
Notes
Argus reports Ryan scoring the fifth goal.
