Melbourne hadn't won at Fitzroy since 1915, and despite taking an early lead their rapidly falling apart 1923 team weren't capable of breaking that streak and they suffered their tenth straight loss of the year.
Despite the Redlegs poor showing, and the fact that they kicked more goals in the last quarter than in the first three quarters combined it was a fast and exciting game. The final quarter performance was even more creditable considering that they'd lost Bill Shelton and Percy Wilson through injuries and the two men were off the ground.
Corbett, Haines and Lilley were Melbourne's best.
