Fighting for a spot in the top four, Melbourne couldn't afford to lose too badly to the second placed Collingwood and they weren't disgraced. The first half of the game was fast and hard, with Collingwood opening up a lead of just under three goals, but when rain fell in the second half it made the ball slippery and ruined the game as a spectacle.

After taking a lead into quarter time Melbourne had a disastrous end to the second quarter, with Purse injured to the point where he was useless and Collingwood kicking three quick goals.

In the second half the rain hit and the players spent much of the second half fighting. Neither club managed a goal during the melee.

Best were Cumberland, Moodie and McGinis.
