Melbourne's 13th straight victory against North Melbourne further consolidated their position at the top of the table and almost completely assured them of finishing in the top two at the end of the year, but the win wasn't without its anxious moments.

The fast starting North went into the first quarter 27 points to the good, with only poor kicking of 4.9 stopping them from completely blowing the game open. The four goals in a row came after they had put the nine behinds on the scoreboard.

Melbourne were back in front by half time but they couldn't kick away until the last quarter despite North missing several of their stars. Despite being top of the ladder and carrying a huge percentage there were still many unconvinced about the Demons' premiership potential and performances like this did nothing to strengthen their position.

Ridley, Thorogood and Gleeson were best. Kenneally was replaced by debutant Baker in the last quarter, and Case by Brian Leahy also in the last quarter.

Ron Barassi was reported for abusive language towards an umpire during the second quarter and was suspended for a week.
