With their regular coach Bob Rose out of business with the Victorian side the Magpies laboured to a 16 point lead at half-time, seemingly relishing not having the hard taskmaster Rose in town. It took a blast from stand in coach Neil Mann to get them going in the third, and from there on their bigger bodies dominated the contest.
Norm Smith admitted that his team couldn't compete with tall, strong sides such as Collingwood, and despite little man Ken Emselle kicking two first half goals and setting up two others there was little support from the Demon talls as the Pies ran away with the match in the second half.
Stand-in Collingwood coach Neil Mann achieved a rare double, winning both the Reserves and seniors games.
Best were Emselle, Dixon and Vagg. Quinn (cut mouth) was replaced by Leahy in the last quarter.
