Going into the bye the Demons recorded their second consecutive victory, ensuring that they wouldn't be the 11th placed team kicked out of the competition after Round 11. Another narrow win left them an outside chance of making the top four if they could put a winning streak together.

Melbourne immediately went on the attack at the opening bounce, using their big men to advantage until breaking through after a Dullard mark. The visitors maintained the lead until late in the quarter when Collingwood's second goal equalled the scores. The Demons kicked two quick goals to open the second quarter, with the Pies trying hard but being comfortably beaten in the air. They managed to restrict the damage to five points at half time.

After the resumption, Collingwood was the clear best side for the first time all day, but after scoring first goal their form deserted them and allowed Melbourne to build a lead. The Magpies kept hanging on though, and a late goal ensured the margin was still only four at the last change. Collingwood hit the lead for the first team early in the last term, before Melbourne struck back to open a lead of over two goals. A late Collingwood strike to cut the margin to six was as close as they could get.

Best were Donald Cordner, Ted Cordner and Fred Fanning. Ron Hobba was an unused 19th man.
