The younger brother of John Tossol and son of a 1950s Seconds player, Tossol was a former captain of Assumption College, and worked at the VFL when he made his debut. He had first appeared in 1980 Reserves games during his school holidays before being invited to play with the Under 19s the next season after leading Assumption to the Melbourne Schools Title. That season he was named Assumption's best player.

His impressive performances during 1981 and a slashing run of form in the reserves early in 1982 led to a senior call up and Tossol goalled with both his first two kicks in senior footy. Tossol's father also played a number of Reserves games for the club.

After leaving Melbourne he played over 200 games for Wangaratta Rovers, winning two premierships as a player and one as a captain/coach. He then played 18 games with Corowa-Rutherglen, coaching them to two flags from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2008 to 2010 .

In 2001 he was coach of Corowa-Rutherglen in the Ovens and Murray League.
