Ruckman Irving debuted for the Eagles on the same day as Dean Kemp and Peter Matera and played for the Western Australian state side in his first season. He played in the 1991 Grand Final loss, but managed only one game in each of the next two seasons before crossing to the Demons.

Irving struggled for games after moving to Melbourne. He broke into the side late in 1994 and played the last six games of the season, including two winning finals but managed just the first six the next year. In 1996 he played two matches early in the year before returning for the last seven games, three of which he failed to rack up a single kick or handball.

After opting for a one year contract at the end of 1996 over returning to the WAFL, Irving playing two games in 1997, a year in which he was sidelined after suffering a snakebite, and retired from senior football midway through the year. He stayed playing in the reserves team and finished second in their B&F.

Returning to the WAFL, he played for Subiaco in 1998 and 1999, also winning a Simpson Medal for his performance against South Australia in a 1998 State of Origin match. He later served as West Coast ruck coach.
