The ruckman started his career with West Coast and played for the WA state side in his first season. He played in the 1991 Grand Final loss, but after 31 games in his first two seasons only managed one in each in 1992 and 1993 before the Eagles delisted him.

Irving played for the Sydney Reserves in the 1994 pre-season with an eye to being selected in the pre-season draft, but returned to Perth when they preferred to focus on developing young ruck talent. He got an opportunity with Melbourne instead, but missed two months with a hamstring injury early in the year and was unable to break into the side until late in the season. He played the last six games, including two winning finals but managed just the first six the next year.

In 1996 he played two matches early in the year before returning for the last seven games, three of which he failed to register a disposal. Irving took a one year contract extension at the end of the season but only played two games the next year, including time sidelined after suffering a snakebite. He retired from the senior side midway through the year, staying to play Reserves and finishing second in their best and fairest.

Returning to the WAFL, he played for Subiaco in 1998 and 1999, also winning a Simpson Medal for his performance against South Australia in a 1998 State of Origin match. He later served as West Coast ruck coach.
