Biggest loss against Sydney and at the SCG

John Northey and Melbourne's horror 1986 campaign reached its nadir when the Demons suffered their third 100 point loss in two months, their eighth largest defeat ever in VFL/AFL history and ninth biggest score ever conceded.

Sydney was in off-field turmoil with Geoffrey Edelsten first resigning as chairman, then threatening to sue the major shareholder, before launching a takeover bid. Behind the scenes ruptures didn't affect the football team, as they kicked the largest score in 158 games between the clubs. Sydney's scoring dominance was so pronounced that full back Rod Carter was able to register his first goal in 215 games. It remains Melbourne's biggest loss against South Melbourne/Sydney, and at the SCG.

Robert Flower was his side's only winner on a wing until being thrown to full-forward in the third term. He failed to kick a goal and it coincided with one of the Swans best periods of the game. When Flower went back to the wing in the last quarter he returned to being his side's only decent contributor.

It was a humiliating return to the SCG for Northey who had been sacked by the Swans at the end of the year before. With Sydney riding high on the ladder and the Demons sitting above just St Kilda at the other end it looked at the time like they'd made the right decision.

Best were Flower, Connolly and Payne. Wilson injured his arm and Allday his leg. The match was played for what was proposed to be a perpetual trophy for games between the clubs at the SCG, the Continental Airlines Cup.
