Matched up against fellow strugglers, Melbourne finally snapped a seven game losing streak on the back of a dominant performance by Bob Johnson who kicked 12.2.
It twice looked grim for the Reds, with Hawthorn holding leads after the first and third breaks - but a storming nine goal final quarter got Melbourne the points at last and moved themselves further away from last place, and above Hawthorn on the ladder into 10th.
Hawthorn had perhaps been the better team for the first three quarters, but when they tired in the last it gave Melbourne the chance to run over the top of them.
Johnson, Niven and Power were best. Glass was replaced by Longhurst in the second quarter when he suffered a dislocated shoulder. Beames suffered a dislocated shoulder.
The ball Johnson kicked 12 with was presented to him at a Gala Night at the Tivoli Theatre two weeks later.
