Usher started his career in Victoria, joined Wangaratta in 1925 then moved to New South Wales in 1927, where he represented the state side, before returning to play in the VFL in 1928

A wingman and occasional centreman, Usher played for Victoria five times. It was said that he "managed to play in the toughest games without his sleekly brushed hair every becoming disarranged".

In addition to his interstate appearances Usher also represented the VFL against the VFA in 1932.

After being cut by Melbourne at the end of 1933 Usher trained with Hawthorn in the 1934 pre-season but did not make their senior list. He joined Golden Point instead, then moved to Tasmania, coaching Lefroy in 1935 and early 1936 before crossing to Burnie.

Served in the Army from 1940 to 1943, last in the 2/4 Company AASC.
