Fitzroy win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Nil

After Fitzroy had won both games against Melbourne in their first VFA, season they made it three from three in the first match between the two sides on the MCG.

On a slippery ground, both teams had their chances in the first half, with Propsting going close for Melbourne before hitting the post, but Fitzroy goalled kicked the only major of the day late in the first half.

The visitors had the best of the early stages of the second half, but as the game wore on Melbourne had a number of good chances that were spurned by poor forward play. Charles Coulson hit the post and McCrindle kicked a goal that was disallowed by the field umpire. They added a number of behinds and hit the post for a third time but could not break through for an equaliser.

Best were Carroll, Propsting and Willis.
