"Juice" Newton missed out on the national draft despite winning the best and fairest award in the Ovens & Murray League, where he had first played seniors aged 15, and had to wait until the pre-season draft for Melbourne to select him. He had been asked to train with the Demons on the advice of the uncle of then assistant coach Greg Hutchison who had seen him play in Albury.
He made his senior debut early in Melbourne's horror 1997 season and played the majority of the season after impressing on debut with a goal from his first kick in league footy. After 13 games in his rookie season his year was ended with an injury in the Round 20 match against West Coast.
After his promising start Newton entered the 1998 season under an injury cloud and failed to play a senior match. His first Reserves games came in late May but Osteitis Pubis would flare time and time again, destroying his season. He never played another senior game, appearing in 1999 practice games and kicking four goals in a comeback Reserves game before a hernia operation put him out for a month. On his return he suffered a season ending shoulder injury and was delisted at the end of 1999.
Newton later worked at the club in a number of administrative and coaching roles including Media Manager from 2003 through 2005, and ruck coach in 2008 before crossing to Hawthorn in the same role for the 2009 season.
